Right when smoothie shops first starting popping up I was hooked on @tropicalsmoothiecafe and loved their Health Nut smoothie with blueberries, banana, mango, almonds and protein. ππ»ββοΈπ
.
I was drinking it all the time and feeling like such a health goddess for choosing the “healthy option” until one day I found out that the smoothie had a whopping 80 grams of sugar… because they add novo sugar to their smoothies!! π€―
.
Even then, years before I became a holistic nutritionist, I was baffled why you’d need to add sugar to something that’s already so sweet from all the fruit… anyhow, I’d still order it, but just specifically ask for it to be made without the 1/4 cup of turbinado sugar (which is just a fancy name for unprocessed sugar) AND without their βhealthyβ alternative sweetener (aka @splenda) π€¦π»ββοΈ, and then I finally just recreated the smoothie and started making it at home. This was around the time I got a @vitamix and realized that you can make thick and creamy smoothies that taste like they came from smoothie shop with that bad boy. π
.
This is just a little reminder that we don’t always know what’s in our food when we’re eating out at restaurants. Granted, nowadays restaurants are more transparent, many post nutritional info and ingredient lists BUT cooking at home is where it’s at when it comes to healthy eating. You know exactly what goes in the food, you control the portion sizes that you’re served and it’s also way cheaper than eating out. π―
.
I definitely enjoy trying new lugar restaurants, but I’d say about 80% of my meals are cooked and eaten at home because I know how beneficial it is to my health. Plus, creating quick and easy, healthy meals is fun for me, obvi! βΊοΈ
.
Anyhow, long story short… this remake of the Health Nut Smoothie is on the blog today and it has 26 grams of sugar, all from the fruit, and it’s still plenty sweet! No additional sugar needed. Link is in my bio β> @eatingbirdfood

Dinner Family
Yessss!! So true about not knowing whatβs in our food when we dine out. This looks amazing and love the colour π
πππͺπ»πͺπ»
Yes! I used to think tropical smoothie cafe was so healthy, until my friend who worked there told me what additional things they put in the smoothies π³ I love making my own smoothies!
Looks delicious π
Peanut paradise was my favorite until I just looked up the facts π²π² wtf
I only eat at home, creating my own dishes are more satisfying and healthy ! Only fruits I can eat are blueberries and pears due to low glycemic ! My husband Son loves all my creations ! Even tho I live in my kitchen, chopping endlessly, itβs so worth it. ππππππππ
Yummππ they look so lush ππΌ
Yum! Looks delicious! Do you have that every day? π
Love the fruity nutty combo
Like Michael Pollan says – we can eat whatever we want as long as we cook it ourselves at home. If I had to actually fry French fries at home every time I wanted them – I wouldnβt eat nearly as many! And even if I did – they would be made healthier!
What a beautiful color!!
Just gorgeous!!!
Smoothie shops are seriously everywhere now ππ»ππ»
My husband and I had the exact same thing happen!! We literally would go to happy hour there 2-3 times per week until we looked at the nutrition information! You don’t realize how much sugar can be added until you start looking at labels. π³π³ but recreations definitely make things better!
These are stunning!
Yum! π€
Great reminder for folks to be aware and ask questions about what the heck is in things we order? Same goes for coffee drinks. I enjoy a mocha, but when I read how much sugar the big chains use I was stunned. Now I make at home or ask for fewer pumps of syrup if I’m out somewhere.
My daughter worked at Tropical Smoothie for a year, some of them (if not all) have mind blowing amounts of sugar. Iβm sad they arenβt healthy like people assume.
