For the past few years I’ve been in an interesting place of healing from hypothalamic amenorrhea after coming off hormonal birth control in 2014. I took a step back from intense workouts, made sure I was fueling my body, reduced my stress levels, did acupuncture and really focused on balancing my hormones. I had to gain quite a bit of weight, but it worked. I’ve had a regular cycle for over a year now. 💃🏻
.
While I was going through the process it felt like the worst thing ever, but there has been some good to come out of it as my mindset around health and fitness has totally changed. It helped me to truly love my body no matter it’s size and I no longer agonize over the number on the scale or say hurtful things about my body. Granted, there are still days where I feel blah or not so great but I’m in such a better place than I was 5-6 years ago. 💞
.
Nowadays I still have fitness goals but they’re no longer tied to reaching a certain number on the scale. I weigh more than I have in the past, but I actually feel more confident and happy with my body than I ever have before (even at my lowest weight) and it’s interesting because I’m also finally starting to see the results I’ve always wanted. Hello, baby ab muscles. 💪🏼 I think part of it is my mindset and part of it is the approach I’ve been taking for the past year — my workouts are focused heavily on strength training with some cardio and my diet is more flexible and intuitive with a focus on whole, real foods — lean protein, lots of veggies, healthy fats and carbs. I’m really excited to see what 2018 brings as I stay consistent with the habits I’ve put in place this past year!
.
Sorry for the long caption — just had to share as this has been on my heart lately. Hopefully it gives you a little insight into my journey and is helpful and motivating. 💗

  • Readjusting to what’s good for your body is tough but well worth it. I was told I needed knee surgery and it didn’t make sense to me for I hadn’t injured it. Realized I was lifting way to heavy deadlifts and my knee cap was off its spot. Had to quit weight lifting, slow down , do a ton of physio, get frustrated because I wasn’t working out but I’m running now. No surgery. I’m heavier then I want to be but I listened to my body and my heart

  • Thanks for sharing! As I fellow overcomer of HA, I love following and keeping up with you. Even though it was one of the hardest things I had to go through, I am so grateful for it because how it taught me to love and nourish my body.

  • This is super refreshing. I’m in the midst of trying to recover from HA and it’s so hard to give up exercise and to let my body gain weight. But i know it’s worth it and I’m glad to see inspiration like this that I will one day be able to (healthfully) be fit again!
